Laminated Safety Glass: Enhancing
Protection and Security with Him Imperial’s Advanced Solutions

Glass is among the oldest and the most fascinating of materials known to mankind. A solid, inorganic material that is widely resistant to natural elements, glass has been used for centuries to create lasting artefacts, decorative articles, and curios that have existed over time. As time progressed and technologies improved, glass began to find a lot more uses, practical and disparate. Today glass is used in house ware, building construction, lab and kitchen equipment, automobiles and furniture to mention a few.

Advancements in technology have enabled specialists to create different types of glass, suitable for a variety of applications – float glass, tinted glass, toughened glass, tempered glass, insulated glass, mirrored glass, wired glass, frosted glass, laminated glass and more.

Among the most popular types and one with a wide range of applications is laminated glass, used widely in building architecture and automobile windshields.

Laminated glass – a distinct edge in safety and security

Laminated glass is an innovative variant of the regular glass which is fragile and breakable. In the event of a breakage, ordinary glass shatters into jagged pieces capable of causing serious and fatal injuries. Laminated glass is made from two or more layers of glass, held together with an interlayer made of PVB (Polyvinyl Butyral), which is chemically bonded to the two layers of glass on either side, using a special process that helps form a strong, homogenous sheet which is not easily broken. The main differentiator of laminated glass is its behaviour under impact. The special PVB layer absorbs impact and opposes penetration. Under extreme impact, the glass could break, but the fragments remain stuck to the PVB resin layer and do not scatter like ordinary glass. This significantly reduces the risk of injury.

Improved security is the other key feature. Intruders often try to break in through windows or doors to trespass into a property. Laminated glass offers another layer of security as it is strong enough to resist intrusion and makes unauthorized break-ins nearly impossible. Even if an unlawful entry occurs, the laminated layer strongly supports the structure ensuring the gaps are difficult to widen. This apart, the glass sheet does not shatter like regular glass, but sticks to the PVB layer makes it difficult for the intruder to break in.

Laminated safety glass – in demand in a range of applications

Laminated safety glass is widely used in display cabinets to showcase valuables such as expensive jewellery and watch showrooms, exotic pet enclosures, aquariums, glass floors etc.

Their security properties are useful in zones such as banks, currency exchange centers, museums and art galleries.

It is also widely used in buildings in glass facades, skylights, balustrades, roof glazing, partitions, etc. and are the first choice for their anti-theft and anti-vandal properties. Since the glass has proven acoustic properties, laminated glass is also extensively used in hotels, airport terminals, recording studios, etc. The most commonly visible use is of course as windshields of vehicles with most of them made from laminated glass.

Laminated glass can be produced with different thicknesses and various coating combinations help create different characteristics such as better insulation, low radiation etc.

Natural light. Acoustic properties.

With an increasing focus on harnessing natural light in buildings, laminated glass is just what architects love as it can absorb up to 99% of the damaging UV rays which means excellent protection for interior surfaces and furniture.

The other advantage of laminated glass is acoustic insulation which helps in reducing noise levels ensuring people can have peace and privacy in their work spaces. Laminated glass produces higher OITC ratings as the PVB laminate dampens vibration thereby retarding sound transmission.
